Notification

Information related to System Center Operations Manager 2007 notification.

Support

SMS notification may not work in all GSM modems (or GSM phones with modems). Operations Manager 2007 only supports GSM modems with PDU mode (Text and block mode are not supported).

Configuring

There are 5 steps in preparing notifications in general:

1. Optional step: If your MOM action account doesn't have access to target LCS server, you may need to create RunAs account and define Notification account account to use that RunAs account.

2. Enabling Notification in global Management Group Settings (Administration->Settings->Notification).

For IM:
- Click "Instant Messaging" tab.
- Check "Enable instant messaging notifications".
- Type full FQDN of IM server.
- Type valid SIP return address (Must have "sip:" prefix. For example: sip:moc.niamodruoy|resuym#moc.niamodruoy|resuym). Caution: Address without "sip:" is not a valid address. (Known issue).
- If using TCP protocol, IM port should be 8080. If using TLS protocol, you must change the IM port to 5061. (Known issue).
- Leave authentication method to NTLM by default.
- Leave format of IM message by default for now (If you'd like to customize it, it's better to do it later once the basic one works first).
- Leave encoding to Unicode (UTF-8) by default.

Notes regarding protocol: The target LCS server must have either protocol enabled. Please refer to LCS server 2005 deployment guide for prereq of using these protocols since it beyonds the scope of this discussion.

For SMS:
- Click "Short Message Service" tab.
- Check "Enable short message service notifications" .
- Leave format of SMS message by default for now (If you'd like to customize it, it's better to do it later once the basic one works first).
- Leave encoding by default.

Notes regarding SMS: You must have GSM modem(s) installed on your computer and no other application uses the COM port at all time if you're planning to use SMS notification. To verify whether your GSM modem can be used by MOM, you can use Windows HyperTerminal (or similar program) and open the COM port with default port settings according to spec of your GSM modem (Tested with Sony Ericsson T610 with COM Port settings: 57600, 8, N, 1, Hardware.)

Or download SMS sender from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=06a4f997-7f69-4891-8929-37b9041924a2&DisplayLang=en

If both software can't recognize/use your COM ports, it means something is wrong with the hardware/connection/settings. Close the "Global Managment Group Settings - Notification" dialog by clicking OK button.

3. Creating Notification Recipients.

Same procedure as using SMTP notification. Just choose "Instant Mesaging/IM" or "Short Message Service/SMS" for channel upon creating device(s) for each recipient. Remember you must type valid address for sip (sip:moc.xxxxxxxxx|xxxx#moc.xxxxxxxxx|xxxx) or valid phone number as address for SMS (i.e.: 206xxxxxxxx. If you need to add
country code or other signs (# or *), you can add them as long as they're valid and don't contain space(s)).

Tips: Use "Always send notifications" for both Recipient and Device schedules for the first time and change them later once you know it works.

4. Creating Notification Subscriptions.

Same procedure as using SMTP notification. Use any recipients as usual. You're allowed to override the default format for each available channel. But it's recommended to leave them by default for the first time.

5. Triggering Notification Subscriptions.

Notification Subscription (non-aging) needs to be triggered by valid active alert. Valid means the alert is in range of the specified filter(s) in your subscription. There are at least 4 filters for subscrption:

- User Role (This is disabled if there isn't user role specified for the user),
- Group (By default, all computers, Network Device, and MOM groups are checked),
- Class (By default, all classes are automatically approved),
- Alert Criteria (By default, all severity, priority, resolution state, category are checked).

For alert-aging subscription, you will need to leave the active alerts not resolved beyond the specified aging time.
