get-discovery cmdlet gives error when executed in SCOM powershell console. When I try to execute 'get-discovery' in powershell console of scom it gives the following error - 'The term 'get-discovery' is not recognized as a cmdlet, function, operable program'. Also, when I execute Get-OperationsManagerCommands, the list of supported cmdlets does not show get-discovery in the list. Though the list contains cmdlets like 'get-Alert', 'Approve-agentPendingAction'.

It seems some of the cmdlets are missing. If anyone has any idea why this is happening please respond to this query.

Hi Friends,
I am very new to SCOM 2007. I am trying to create a new monitor (From Authoring»Monitors»right click and say “Create New Monitor» Unit Monitor”) for monitoring the network PDUs.
On “First snmpProbe” page, it asks for “Object Identifier”. What i need to provide here??
Also, on next page “Build First Expression” window, it asks for “Parameter Name”, where can i get this Parameter Name??
I am sorry, but since i am new to this SCOM 2007, i don’t know where and in which document i will get this information about parameter list and their values.

Can you please help me in this?

Hi all,
First of all, i'm quite new in Ops Mgr, so excuse my vocabulary. :)

I've installed and imported IIS Management Pack on my SCOM2007 server. I can see a lot of informations about my web server. That's great. ;)

I've installed agent and MP for my Windows XP Client, and every thing is fine. That's great to. ;)

But now, I would like to go further. I'd like to know the response time from my XP client to the WEB SERVER. Is it possible ?

SCOM 2007 Agent on Exchange 2007 Server

I have recently deployed agents to Exchange 2007 servers for monitoring purposes. Initially everything was okay, meaning I could get the reports of mailbox availability for all (4) mailbox servers. Now off-late when I select the report mailbox availability report one two of the 4 servers show. On seeing this I uninstalled the agent on both the problematic servers and repushed agent. On this one of the servers came up in the report, but the other server still having issues getting the reports. Quick look on the computer state states critical on AGENT for this server and this is the same for other server as well which I am getting the reports. I do not know how do I troubleshoot these issues..it is really driving me crazy. any help is much appreciated.

Hello. I require help to monitor Dell Servers. Do not know why some Dell servers can be monitored and some cannot. Do not think that updating firmware or Openmanage Server administrator solve the monitoring problem as some Dell servers that I have can be monitored using older version of Openmanage with non-updated firmware.

Unable to retrieve alerts by command using get-alert for a particular ConnectorStatus

I am working SCOM command shell API. However, I am unable to retrieve alerts by command using get-alert for a particular ConnectorStatus. For ex. for a particular alert the value of ConnectorStatus is 'NotMarkedForForwarding' but when I execute the following command - get-alert -criteria {ConnectorStatus = 'NotMarkedForForwarding'} I get the following error:

Get-Alert : Conversion failed when converting the nvarchar value 'NotMarkedForForwarding' to data type int.

The issue here is that the API is expecting some int value for ConnectorStatus instead of the visible string value. Does anyone has any idea where I can get the exact mapping of these text to int values?

Can anybody please tell me how can I put a computer in maintainence mode using SCOM command shell API? I can see there is an API by the name 'New-maintainenceWindow' but that puts monitoring objects into maintainence mode and not any specific computer monitored by SCOM.

I am working with SCOM Command shell API and I observed that total count of events different when retrieved directly from application and from command shell API.

Following is the command that I am executing:get-event

Total no of events that I got were 3018 however, from the application when I search using the 'Advanced Search' functionality the total no of events found were - 1904.

Can anybody tell me why is this difference? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to search alerts by TimeRaised. I am using get-alert cmdlet along 'criteria' parameter to achieve this. Following is the expression that I am executing:

get-alert -criteria {TimeRaised = '3/3/2009 10:26:32 AM'}

However, I am not getting the desired results.

Can anyone tell me what is the correct expression to find alerts using any datetime fields such as TimeRaised?

SCOM/SCCM Reporting Services Interoperability

We are in our research and planning stage of implementing SCOM and SCCM in our environment. The project is rather intricate and distributed. In order to try and make it less complex and distributed; we would like to figure out if we can use the same SRS instance on a dedicated box for both SCOM and SCCM. We do know that SCOM changes the SRS instance for its own use and is not recommended for use with other reporting needs but since SCCM is a part of the System Center family, we thought maybe it is possible to converge the two onto one box.

Does anyone have experience in this type of scenario? If it is possible is it straight forward or a complex set of steps to setup and maintain?

SCOM 2007 logical disk free space monitor

Hello everybody!

Im just starting with SCOM 2007, and I'm experimenting some very weird issues, with a logical disk free space monitor. The issue is that Im configuring a unit monitor for these counter in the next way:

Monitor Type: Windows Performance Counter > Static Threshold > Single Threshold > Simple Threshold

Performance Counter:
Object: Logical Disk
Counter: % Free Space
(I check the all instances option)

Threshold Value: 20.00 (Im trying to configure a threshold of 20 % of free space)

Configure Threshold:
Under Threshold = Healthy
Over Threshold = Critical (I mean that if the % free space is below of 20% it's a critical warning)

So thats the way Im creating the monitor. When the monitor is enabled it send some real alerts of logical disk with a % free space under 20, but it sends me alerts of logical disks with a 93% of free space, the most of the alerts are in this way, over the 20% free space threshold. I'have been trying anything and Im wondering that this error must be by a really stupid reason, but i dont find anything more to try :S Really appreciate your help, thanks in advance.

grouping severs based on registry value

I am new to Operations Manager 2007. I have a requirement where i have to create a grouping of servers based on a registry key value. The servers to be targeted have reqestry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\world\Data

This key contains a value dDataServer of type dword. If its the value is 0000001 then the server should be added to the group. I created a attribute in Opr Manager 2007 which probes the registry for the value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\world\Data\dDataserver. I chose the Attribute type to be int.

I then created a group which uses the custom attribute. However when i view the devices in this group i dont see any computer. Can any one help me with this?

Is there a way to create subscriptions for specific types of alerts from ALL clients that is more accurate? Especially if you are monitoring something that is on almost every server and workstation like the SMS client, (SCCM).
I would like everything you see in the >Alerts under the >“Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007” management pack to be sent to a SCCM manager.
Currently if I select all computers under Groups, and only “ConfigMgr” under classes, you get SOME of the alerts. Only the ones that the “Class” is something under ConfigMgr”.
The problem is most of the SCCM alerts, like ConfigMgr 2007 Component Health” are in the “Windows Computer” class. If you change your subscription to include only computers in the SCCM management pack (the same thing as ALL computers) and your class to “Windows Computer” you get EVERY alert there is.
The SCCM Alerts properties runs this statement that I would like to use in supscriptions or groups some how:
Criteria:
View all alerts
with Not Equals 255 resolution state
and with a %ConfigMgr 2007% name

Any ideas???

Flushing Events from the OpsMgr Console

In my development environment I often need to override rules that create events. To see if my overrides are working, I would like to flush out all events from the OpsMgr console for a specific management pack to get a "clean slate". Is there a way to do this besides changing database grooming settings? Like maybe a powershell command?

I used to be an HP OpenView guy until the decision was made to go to MOM 2005. I am now upgrading

My environment is set up in such a way that multiple users will need access to a single server, but only certain aspects of it. Example — if I scope a user to SMS servers then they have full rights on any severs with SMS — not just the SMS component. Anyone have an idea on how I can get around this?

I created my own rule with a threshold alert of 10% or less disk space. Ops mgr is picking the right server but alerting on the wrong drives! Is this a bug? It is ALERTING me that c: drive has < 10% disk space when it has 50% free! Also, why is it constantly close the alert and then opening others and closing again? I dont understand this behavior. Optimize Memory on OpsMgr Database Server

I want to make sure OpsMgr and SQL are maximizing the use of the large amount of RAM I have in the server. I have "Lock pages in memory" enabled, and my page file is on C and is set to "system managed". I've also noticed that the "sqlservr" process generally runs pretty high for a good portion of the day, then drops back down to a normal percentage.. and not quite sure why that is. Does anyone know of any other SQL/Windows/OpsMgr tweaks I could use to boost performance

SQL 2005 agent - stat collection not working

Hi,

I've noticed that on some of my SQL 2005 DB servers, the data collection that the SQL2005 agent is suppose to do (like DB size collection etc), is not working. The pattern seems to be that if the DB server houses only a few DBs, the stats are collected, but if the DB server has got heaps of DBs (> 200) the stats are not collected. All the DBs shows up in Operation Manger, but I cannot see any data for it in the reports or in the monitoring views. Does anyone know if there is a threshold for the number of database or something similar that needs to be set that will correct the collection?

How do you accomplish Event Consolidation

I have a MOM 2000 installation I am in the process of replacing with OM7. In MOM 2000 you could create Event Collection rules AND Event Consolidation rules for those types of events you knew (or learned) would overwhelm the database. I cannot find an event consolidation rule within OM7. I also looked for consolidation options within the event collection rule, but there are none. How does one create a rule in OM7 that does consolidation?
I see there are consolidation options within the Repeated Event Unit monitor, but I am not trying to monitor the health of anything. I only need to collect the events for possible review at a later time. This is also confusing, because in the past you needed to collect an event before you could create any rules that would be triggered by that event, so I would expect to see consolidation options on the collection rule, not the monitor.
If this is possible, I would also like to know what SQL table/view/column the consolidation is represented in, as I do some custom reporting that must include the true repeat count of such events. For example, in MOM2000 the view EventView had a column named IsConsolidated, and a table named EventConsolidated.

Alert settings and reporting values

I am creating some monitors to manage Exchange 2003 queues. The default SCOM 2007 ones are baselines. I am creating Thresholds. When a queue goes over say 20 for 10 mins I want to report this and give the current value of the queue. I have created the monitor and it reports when triggered, but I cannot get the value to be retrieved.

I copied the value from the original baseline, it is "$Data/Context/Property[@Name='Average']$" but this reports nothing in the new threshold - it comes out blank. I tried adding a property called "$Data/Context/[Average]$" but this didn't work either.

This is what is reported in the alert: "The Mailbox Store Send Queue has been above 20 for over 10mins. The current value is"

In short, how can I get a list of properties and values to report in the Alerting page under the Alert Description?

Can someone provide links or more information to the nature of SCOM and SQL Server? We are looking at monitoring solutions, and I would like to know how in depth I can get with SQL Server 2005. What can be monitored? I am a database guy, So I am looking at blocks, locks, database file growth, etc… Not specific to operating system Performance Counters, but SQL Server specific. If I can write my own monitors and use them with SCOM, that could help. I am more interested to find any management packs that have more indepth monitoring of SQL Server.

Not monitored in Diagram View

Mark the newbie here.

How can I remove the "Not monitored" subtree of a server object in Diagram view?

When I look at the diagram view of a particular file server, it has two children: Healthy and Not monitored.
Healthy contains all the good stuff like DFS, Print Server, Disks and IIS.
Not monitored contains stuff like Microsoft_Windows_2003_Distributed_File_System_Servers_Installation and Microsoft_Windows_2003_Servers_With_Distributed_File_System_Service_Installation which, when I look at the Health Explorer for those nodes, tell me that they are rollup monitors and that their state is unknown because either monitoring has not begun or there are no monitors defined.

Now, my boss is looking at these things and asking me why they are there. Shouldn't they be monitored? What, exactly, are they?

So, can I remove, disable, cover up, or whatever these Not monitored nodes, so that the Diagram view only contains things that we are monitoring?

Alternatively, what things should go into these rollup monitors, and where do I enable them so that they become "Monitored"?

SCOM07 Reporting Installation Error

Hey all.

I've been having issues installing the SCOM07 Reporting component recently. I followed Microsoft's deployment guide to install SCOM07. I created all of the recommended users and groups in active directory and made sure the proper databases were created in SQL. A note on the installation: I am installing both the OpsMgr and Reporting on the same computer.

I try installing the Reporting component and get through the install screens. When the install begins to roll, however, it stops before anything progress during the "Loading Management Server Action and SDK Account." When I look in the installation log and search for value 3, i find: "_SetPropertiesToManagementServerActionAndSDKAccountCA. Return value 3."

I search for any kb articles on this error and came across: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936219

I requested the hotfix and applied it to the system in question. I tried the installation again, but it fails with the same errors. The kb article above also lists a workaround as described in: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936220/ . I went through the procedures outlined in the first section and then tried the installation again, which failed with the same error.

Can anyone think of anything else this may be? I am stuck at this point and have no idea what to try because I can't find any more information that references this error.

I've installed in a test domain and have the ops mgr installed and am trying to deploy clients without luck. I got one to install but when i try to remote it it tells me i'm not authorized to remote it. I'm the domain admin. ? the console still states there is no client on the machine also.

Cannot install Reporting

I cant install Reporting on my Operation Manager 2007 server. I use SQL 2005 64bit but the Reporting database is 32bit. Sp2 is installed on the SQL 2005. I get the following error on my SCOM server when i run the prerequi check. "The SQL servicepack 1 is not installed!!"

When I whas trying to update the sp in need to run the x86 to update the 32bit services, like the Reporting and 64bit sp to update the remaining services on the SQL. And I cant install hotfixes because the SQL always ask for sp1??

It looks there is a bit conflict between the 32bit database and the 65bit serverversion, or am I barking at the wrong tree.

I want to update you that, I have configured baseline (threshold/sensitivity) values for the SCOM 2007 recurring alerts (see below). It seems everything is working fine. let me watch for another 15 days.

The configuration details are as follows:

I.Scope:Windows Server 2003 Operating System
Alert:1) The Total Percentage interrupt time is too high
Target server: Filemaker (threshold value 45), Systemscenter (threshold value 45) and Shares (threshold value 25)

II.Scope:Windows Server 2003 Operating System
Alert:1) The Total CPU Utilization Percentage is too high
Target server: All Windows Server 2003 OS computers group

III.Scope:Active Directory Domain Controllers server 2003 computer role
Alert:1) The Op Master RID Master Last Bind latency is above the configured threshold (threshold value 25)
2) The Op Master PDC Last Bind latency is above the configured threshold (threshold value 30)
3) The AD Last Bind latency is above the configured threshold (threshold value 25)
Target server: All Active Directory Domain Controllers server 2003 computers group

IV.Scope:Terminal Servers
Alert:1) Terminal Services Active Sessions metric above baseline (Inner sensitivity:2.81/Outer sensitivity:3.31)

SCOM alert issues

Hi I am Yogaprakash KG, working on SCOM2007 from last 3 months. I am now in the beginner stage. I have installed SCOM 2007 server in our organisation with monitoring around 15 servers(windows).

Recently SCOM server generating huge number of recurring alerts with an timeframe of 10 mins. It is generating approximately 50-70 alerts(same). I want to reduce the alerts, by configuring some baseline values to the generating alerts. Can anybody please help me to configure these alerts parameters. Below are the most recurring alerts our SCOM server generating with a timeframe of 5 mins. I want to set some baseline values to these alerts to reduce the alert storm.

These were the alerts which are generating in huge numbers:

I am new to Operations Manager of any flavor and am having some issues at this point. I am getting an alert every couple of days that states "Operational Data Reporting submission failed". In looking over the alert I also see that my data reader account created during deployment doesn't have sufficient permissions to perform the operation. So…at this point I have verified that that account is a member of the Op Manager Report Operators user role. But other than that I am at a loss for where to go next.

Deployment with domain and non-domain servers

Is it possible to install a single server scenario of SCOM2007 and monitor/manage servers in the AD domain and outside the AD domain?
Or do you have to do multiple server scenario to manage/monitor servers not in the AD domain?

If I have to go with multiple server scenario to manage servers outside of the domain, what are the bare necessity components to put on each server? I know sql would be on its own box, but how are the other components broken up?

Hi,
appreciate any help on question below.

I created custom script to check windows service parameters and need to link it to respective monitor.
The "default" scenario is to target script monitor to Windows computer.
This can work ok but only if I want to propagate monitor state to win computer object.
What I need is to aggregate state of services from several PCs and to build Distributed App model basing on summary state (e.g. Model in critical state if all services become failed). If I take Win PCs to fill Distributed App container than I will have the aggregate state of PCs objects, not services as I need.

Which class to use to target script monitor to to build the required scenario?

Hi,

Need som tips/recommandations on how to tune OPS mgr 2007. We have a large complex infrastructure, where we have placed a test installation in our production enviroment. The next step is to monitor the console and tune alerts before installing the final ops mgr solution.

I need help how to approch the necessary tuning. example, tuning Exchange, would it be better to create a new management pack with overrides, or should we change default exchange management pack.

All/any information on tuning would be great.

installing gateway server

Please help, I need to install gateway server in the DMZ to monitor web servers. Before istalling GW in the DMZ I decided to test it on the stand alone server which is not a part of domain but on the same network. I did next steps:
1)obtained sertificate for my management server and imported this certificate with momcertimport.exe into both management server and gw server.
2)installed MOMGateway.msi on the GW server.
3)Run Approval tool on the management server and registered GW server
After all procedures GW appeared on the management servers pane but his health service not monitored. Event log on the GW server shows this error: The OpsMgr Connector cannot create a mutually authenticated connection to (management.server.here) because it is not in a trusted domain.

When Overrides don't cut it...

Apparently, user interface exposed settings in a rule can be overriden. However, what if a configuration item in a rule is not exposed through the user interface although you can see what needs to be changed in XML? Unfortunately, the MP is sealed and cannot be directly edited.

So I am between a rock and a hard place…MP is sealed and can't be edited vs. Overrides will not work for certain configuration items.

Now I know if you Export the MP and then re-import it then we would effectively unseal it. However, this is rather drastic in my opinion as it undermines why MP's should be sealed in the first place.

Where is my MANAUAL OVERRIDE!!!

AD Integration

I am having some problems with AD integration. I have used the excellent detailed guide on AD integration in Operations Manager 2007 by Pete Zerger and Anders Bengtsson. Now don't get me wrong; this is a very good tutorial but I might have missed something or done something wrong and I need some help to solve it.

I have run MoMADAdmin first
MomADAdmin DIT_SB "testscom\Operations manager Administrators" testcom\scom testscom
Set Auto Agent Assignment
Modify Registry on RMS to enable AD Integration
Set security settings to review new manual agent installations in pending management

However MoMADAdmin does not create the service connection point for my Root Management Server. I have tried Agent deployment using GPO. It works well except that you have to add msxml6 installation to the script and you are done. I tried the script as it is (without modifications) on a member server with msxml6 already installed. The deployment went well and both MontoringHost.exe and healthservice.exe are started and running. The agent pushes OS information to my Ops Mgr console (I have installed OS Management Pack).

I have recently added another member server in the OU where the GPO applies. The Agent has been installed after I modified the script to install msxml6 first and then Ops Mgr Agent; HealthService is started on this server but no instance of MonitoringHost.exe is running. This time, the member server does not even appear in Pending management. healthService verbose in the Ops Mgr event log the following; "No Management groups were started. This may either be because no managements groups are currently configured or a configured management group failed to start. The Health Service will wait for policy from Active Directory configuring a management group to run."

The tutorial also mentions something about MoMADAdmin update switch. Since I did not find the switch to do this, I deleted Operations Manager Container in AD and run MoMADAdmin again. It creates the Operations Manager container again but still no SCP for my Root Management Server.

Can you please help or suggest any link where I can get further information to troubleshoot this problem. I have also read the guide from infrontconsulting on the same topic. They mentioned SDKServiceSCP but not the RMS SCP.

problem with the eval version MOM 2007

we are about to deploy the MOM 2007 in our org, hence for test phase we installed the mom 2007 eval version sucessfully later while working on it the virtual PC crashed due to memory issue, later when we uninstalled the mom and reinstalled it gave the web based operator console and which ask us to upgrade to full version we even tried formating the server and reinstall the mom 2007 but we get same console.

Any idea why does it happens, do we need to check something before we reinstall since we have show proof of concept to our seniors mgmt

It won't seem to let me create a monitor object and associate it with the MP because the MP is not sealed.

I was wondering whether ops mgr 2007 able to monitor file transfer activity.

e.g. Can it monitor a file transfer activity between 2 nodes (server-server or server-client) and generate report or warning should the file transfer fails or successful?

I understand that under the event log, such file transfer activity is not being recorded by windows, so how do ops mgr 2007 able to cater such requirement?

OpsMgr Connector issue with domain in another forest

I have two domains (A and B) in two separate forests. Both domains run in Windows 2000 native functional level. Both forests run in Windows 2000 functional level.
There is a two-way non-transitive external trust between both domains.
OM runs on a server (OM1) in domain A.
Agent installation for servers in both domains are successful.
However, on the server in domain B, in the Operations Manager event log, I get two errors.

 Event Type: Error Event Source: OpsMgr Connector Event Category: None Event ID: 20057 Description: Failed to initialize security context for target MSOMHSvc/OM1.A.local The error returned is 0x80090303(The specified target is unknown or unreachable). This error can apply to either the Kerberos or the SChannel package.

 Event Type: Error Event Source: OpsMgr Connector Event Category: None Event ID: 21001 Description: The OpsMgr Connector could not connect to MSOMHSvc/OM1.A.local because mutual authentication failed. Verify the SPN is properly registered on the server and that, if the server is in a separate domain, there is a full-trust relationship between the two domains.

On the support site, there is no information available about these errors.
Can someone help me out here?
